What Does Athletes Foot Look Like

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection which causes various symptoms to appear on the feet. There are different symptoms associated with athlete's foot and each symptom can be dependant upon the biological chemistry of the infected person. For instance, in the case of vesicular athlete's foot, where blisters form on the feet (and sometimes, on other parts of the body), this is down to an allergic reaction to the fungi. People with diabetes may also be more prone to developing athlete's foot.

As there are different symptoms associated with athlete's foot, there really is no telling how it may appear on your feet. Some symptoms to look out for are:

  • Scaly, dry, cracked, flaky, or peeling skin on the sole or heal of the foot or in between the toes. Sometimes this can take on the pattern of a moccasin, hence the term 'moccasin-type' athletes foot, as it is sometimes known.
  • Pustules, sores and blisters may develop on the toes, in between the toes, on the sole of the foot and on top of the foot. This symptom is known as 'vesicular athlete's foot'. This can be very sore, and may sting and burn.
  • Other early symptoms of athlete's foot may be inflammation or reddening of the foot, and the incessant urge to scratch and persistent itching.

Athletes foot can be very tenacious, and the best way to treat athletes foot is to catch it in the early stages and begin treatment as soon as possible. If you suspect you are developing athletes foot you will be best off seeing your doctor for a confirmed diagnosis. Your doctor will know of the type, and severity of your athletes foot therefore no time will be wasted in prescribing you with the best medication or information to treat your athletes foot.

You can also purchase many good athletes foot treatments from the pharmacist without prescription, and these will work in most cases of athletes foot.

If your athletes foot doesn't appear to be clearing up after the allotted time with either off-the-shelf medications or prescribed medications, you should visit your doctor to tell them you're athletes foot still hasn't cleared up and ask for something stronger.
